I’m glad you’ve enjoyed learning more about daily life in China. Right now I’m planning future posts, and want to know what YOU want to know about China. Anything is game: food, recipes, signs, how things are done, language, etc. The only rule is it cannot be negative. So post a comment and let me know what you want to see here!
Manholes
Posted in Humor Scene, Superlatives on 11/14/2010 07:38 pm by PaulChina: Land of Superlatives. China is home to the world’s largest population, largest hydroelectric dam, largest golf resort, largest airport terminal, the world’s longest sea-crossing bridge (22 miles long), the world’s highest train (16,640 feet), and the world’s fastest train (almost 220 miles/hour) just to name a few. China also has the world’s largest number of cellphone and internet users, is the world’s largest consumer of concrete and steel, and is the world’s largest automobile producer.
But there is one more that very few people are aware of: The world’s largest number of manholes!
They are everywhere. In the middle of the road, the middle of the sidewalk, and ALWAYS lumped together in large numbers. Like this beautiful 2×2 collection.
Watch out for all those manholes! You never know when the lid might be loose or missing on one.
Special Bonus: 100 points to the first person to guess what those nice yellow tiles on the sidewalk are.
This one must not be in use anymore. Hope no one is still inside!
Need to build a staircase or ledge but there is already a manhole there? No problem! Just build around it.
How many manholes can you find in this picture?
Name that veggie!
Posted in Food Scene, Name That Food on 10/08/2010 10:04 pm by PaulIts time for what I hope will be a regular feature on China Scenes: name that veggie! China has a huge variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for sale, many of which are not commonly sold in the United States. When I first saw this one, I thought it looked like an alien head with bright green hair. Can you name this veggie? If so, leave a comment! The first correct answer wins and receives 100 China Scenes points, which are really valuable.
Packaging
Posted in Food Scene, Packages and Signs on 10/08/2010 09:57 pm by Paul
In China, buying packaged foods is a great adventure. Its like playing the lottery. Or opening up a box of Cracker Jacks. You just never know what you’re going to find inside. And those pictures on the outside of the package? They’re only there for visual stimulation. In fact, they often have nothing in common with what is inside the package. That’s why I love going into grocery stores and buying random snack foods. You never know what you’ll find inside! Like these yummy beef flavored corn chips, that definitely are not in the shape of waffle fries.
Welcome!
